Sling

We live on a glass

planet, in skins of crystal,

protecting organs made

of porcelain, all as beautiful

as the sun-sparkled stream

from which are taken

seven smooth stones we like

to sling at each other.

They were young

and away from home

for the first time—

scared, cold, wet,

mud-caked. Witnesses

insist the first salvo

came from the Germans,

“Stille Nacht, Heilige

Nacht” shattering

the frozen evening lull.

Returning fire, “The First

Noel” launched

from the British trenches

across the wired wasteland,

both sides then exchanging

carols like musical artillery

shells. As daylight

broke, handshakes

and gifts replaced

song . and shouts

of soccer shuttled

combat to the rear,

as officers scratched

their whiskerless

chins .
