In the morning, Ma drops another bomb on us. She’s really getting to be an expert at this. Apparently, a distant relative’s coming down and is going to be staying with us till heaven knows when.

‘For what joy! And does that mean you’re going to be taking leave?’

‘Don’t be silly, Kavya!’

‘So … what? Am I expected to hang out with this distant relative? Who’s it, anyway?’

‘A neighbour of ours from long, long ago. From when you were really small.’

‘Whaaaat! Are you serious? She’s not even a relative then!’

‘As good as one. We were very close to her and her family. She’s a widow now and her child—god, look at me calling him child! That’s really funny because Nandu’s my age. He’s got kids older than you, I think!’

‘Yes, ha ha, carry on … still don’t know why she’s coming here! Why doesn’t she go to this Nandu’s house?’

‘Kavya! Stop that! I hate it when you’re impertinent! Nalini Mami—you call her Paati—can’t go and stay in Nandu’s place because he lives in the US. She visits once in a while but doesn’t seem to like it enough to go and live there. So when she said that she’s kind of lonely and could she come over and stay with us for a change of scene, I said yes, why not … I mean, she was a big help when Naresh and I got married. You know we lived in Trichy for a brief while? After we came back from the US? You used to be with her all the time … absolutely adored her. Though she had a job herself, she took care of us like we were her own children. Half the time we’d eat at their place.’

‘That’s great for you but what are we supposed to do with her! This is not the time to reciprocate! Ma, that Kumari’s cooking is terrible and … and we should be in school, Ma, not cooking for some granny type. What’s happening about school? Are you looking for admissions anywhere? Can you try this international school here? My tenth standard exams, Ma!’

‘Kavya! Stop getting hysterical! I know you have tenth standard exams! I’m not stupid or irresponsible, you know! Paati will be here by early afternoon, okay? I’m sending a car from office to pick her up from the station and drop her here. Be polite and well-behaved, both of you! Dittubaby still asleep? Give him a hug from me when he wakes up!’

‘I don’t want that granny here! Please!’

Ma’s picked up her bag and is stuffing things into it and I know she’s not listening to me anymore. She’s going ‘Mmmhmm. Really? That’s great!’ when I’ve just said I’m in love with Kiran and plan to run away with him that weekend.

You see, that K name is banned at home. Ma thinks Kiran and his family are ‘foreigners with no morals’. Which is strange because her own parents are practically foreigners and then there’s Mads and Mark. But like I said earlier, Mom just makes up stuff as she goes along.
