Research and Experimentation Costs

If you have research and experimentation costs (usually referred to as R&D costs), you have a choice of ways to deduct them. You can claim a current deduction for amounts paid or incurred in the year.

Alternatively, you can elect to amortize them over a period of not less than 60 months. Where you do not have current income to offset the deduction, it may be advisable to elect amortization. And there is a 10-year amortization option that avoids any AMT adjustment for owners of pass-through entities.
