Is the spiritual struggle carried out mainly by mystics?
The internal, spiritual jihad, signified by the Quranic term sabr, refers to the ongoing struggle on the part of all humans to control oneâs base desires and to strive to better oneself as an individual; this in turn is expected to lead to better relations with others. This broad understanding of the internal, spiritual, and social aspects of jihad lays to rest the assumption that you have to be a mystic to practice it. This is a claim made by some to downplay the central significance of patient forbearance or the internal, spiritual jihad in mainstream Muslim piety and ethics. It should be noted that Sufism or mysticism is not outside the mainstream of Islam; it is very much part and parcel of the rich mosaic of devotional practices and spiritual orientations that make up the diverse and dynamic Islamic tradition.
