Faith Lewis glanced nervously around at the sound of approaching motorcycles. The neighboring county to Hallow was home to The Serpents, a mysterious community of bikers which normally stayed in the background. The Serpent’s members roared out of hiding when Luke Powers, infamous for his wealth and listed as Sexiest Man of the Year, came into town for events.

Standing in front of The Hallow County Courthouse, her eyes widened as a man covered in more facial hair than Faith, in all her eighteen years on earth, had seen. Hard brown eyes met hers as he stepped forward and thrust a hand out, “My name is Zach. Your mother sent me.”

Jumpy and a bit awkward by nature, Faith Lewis projected an all-American beauty to which she was completely oblivious. Smiling anxiously, she nodded, “If my mom trusts you, that’s good enough for me.”

Amusement bled into his eyes, “Becca is a good woman. You’re lucky to have her as a mother.”

For her eighteenth birthday, Faith’s mother promised something that would change her life forever. Knowing that her mother worked for Luke Powers, she hoped to meet the man that she’d had a crush on forever.

She looked around and shyly asked the biker, “Mom said that you’re his bodyguard.”

Zach nodded, amusement sparkling in his brown eyes, and motioned toward the other bikers, “Have you ever ridden a bike, Faith?”

She shook her head as he offered her a helmet. Stepping forward, she studied it before saying in a small voice, “You’ll have to help me.”

Zack’s eyes softened slightly as he took the helmet again. Seating it expertly on her head, he clipped the chinstrap and patted the seat behind him, “Hang on tight and move with my body.”

Faith suddenly felt breathless as she straddled the huge machine and wrapped her arms around the biker’s massive chest. At almost six feet tall, Faith’s hands still only rested on each side of his chest. His calloused fingers suddenly brushed her hands to lower them. The bike roared to life under her, vibrating her body until she thought that her teeth would crack.

A police cruiser pulled out before two bikes. Zach pulled forward, followed by a few more bikes and another police cruiser. Faith bit her bottom lip, scrunching down behind the massive biker with her cheek to his back. Her long blond hair streamed out under the helmet. She had no idea where they were taking her.

Scrunching her eyes shut, she focused on the fact that her mother knew these guys. Faith had seen her bring home the same black and silver serpent logo that the community wore on their jackets. Clinging to Zach’s massive torso throughout the journey, Faith thought about what the mysterious gift could be again. Her mother wasn’t normal by any stretch of the imagination. Divorced from Faith’s father, Becca ran an elite shoe shop for Luke Powers. When asked about it, she was always rather vague. One thing Faith did know was that she was being groomed to take over her mother’s position one day.
