Envision What the Other Person Could One Day Be

The third thing that the other pastor said was that he was committed from that point forward to believing Philippians 1:6, both for himself and for me. He looked me in the eye and said, “Scott, I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Christ Jesus.” When he looked at me and saw a caterpillar, he would choose to envision the butterfly. When he looked at me and saw a single seed, he would choose to envision the forest that the seed is going to become through Christ. And he would remind himself that God loves caterpillars just as much as God loves butterflies.

From that moment, the other pastor ceased to be “the other pastor” to me. From that moment, he was my friend, a conduit of God’s grace to me, a person with whom I look forward to sharing another beer in the new heaven and new earth—with no bar fights. I look forward to the day when there is nothing in either of us to critique, but only to affirm. I look forward to that day, the day of Christ Jesus, when both of us will see with clear eyes how the friction between us contributed to the smoothing of the sandpaper and to our ultimate completion in Christ.

It is not, it never has been, and it never will be a Christian’s job to judge non-Christians.
