The Spiritual Anarchist

He felt that his whole life was some kind of dream and he sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it.

Douglas Adams

I am sitting with Karl and his twin kids John and Clare. We are having a little reunion lunch celebrating their roles in Theory . The twins are both learning to drive now, so that makes them however old that makes them. John and Clare were eager to participate during the time I lived over their garage and wrote the book, and they seem even more eager now that I have immortalized them in print, as if they have inherited an obligation to your spiritual welfare.

They’re finishing their pizza, winding things down, when they wind things back up.

“Do I have a Little Bastard?” asks Clare out of nowhere.

“Yeah, how about me?” adds John.

“I have one, right?” says Clare.

“How can I not?” asks John.

“I think I hear mine sometimes,” says Clare.

“Mine tells me I’m not awake,” says John.

“If I listen to him, will I be enlightened?” asks Clare.

“Is this how it starts?” asks John.

Karl looks at me sideways, like this is my fault.

The Little Bastard is the person inside the person, the authentic seeker behind the false facade which students outwardly project. The Little Bastard is the agitator, the spiritual anarchist, the crazy little bullshit-hater who wants to burn everything down to see what’s left, and then burn that down too. It was always my impression when speaking with supposedly spiritual people that the outer person was just the camouflaged shell of that person’s egoic defense system. All spiritual aspirants are engaged in this self-deception and that’s why they fail at their stated goal of waking up while succeeding at their unstated goal of staying asleep.

The internal motivations of the spiritual seeker are very different from those on display. The outer person is just the cosmetic layer draped over the structural framework of ego. Enslaved by their own egoic imperatives, they are engaged not in the pursuit of waking up but in conspiring against it. Weird, I know, and weirder for you because you’re probably engaged in this self-deception right now. I mean, right?

This is such a common phenomenon that it effectively defines the modern spiritual seeker. Sincerity and level of commitment mean nothing. Practice and technique mean nothing. Knowledge and understanding mean nothing. The only thing that means anything is if the suicidal maniac inside you is able to lure you to the edge of the abyss and give you a push when you’re peering over.

Such is the inherently fraudulent nature of the teacher-student dynamic. In the authentic teacher-student dynamic, there is actually very little dynamic at all because the person making the journey doesn’t need any help. Just like falling off a cliff; once you’ve taken that tricky first step, the rest is pretty self-explanatory. The false dynamic may require interaction with a teacher, but the authentic one is a solo thing.

The majority of people who have approached me to ask questions or request assistance have been playing the truthseeker role rather than actually seeking truth.
