Rugby’s arrival in Japan dates to the turn of the 20th century, when it found popularity in some of Japan’s oldest universities. It is one of many sporting rivalries upheld to this day between Tokyo’s Waseda and Keio Universities (together called Sōkei and comparable to the rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge). Japanese rugby’s real moment in the sun began with a remarkable win for Japan over South Africa in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and two further wins in the pool-play stages, though Japan failed to qualify for the quarter-finals due to the bonus-points system. The next Rugby World Cup will be held in Japan in autumn 2019. The first Rugby World Cup to be held in Asia, it promises much.

Problems with the Tokyo Olympic Stadium (see Stadium) have prevented its use, but the twelve venues from across Japan (with the majority on the main island of Honshū, three in Kyūshū and one in Hokkaidō) provide an unrivalled opportunity for the sport and its fans to travel and celebrate the game.

The Japanese rugby team, coached by Kiwi Jamie Joseph, are known as the Brave Blossoms and are eyeing a place in the Top 8 and a successful sell-out World Cup across the country.
