Soldiers of the Malay Regiment move at the double across open ground in prewar training exercises. Two brigades of Malay troops were part of the garrison of Singapore in 1942 and were described as being of ‘low quality, poorly trained and indifferently led’. When the fighting began some Malayans fought well when led by officers they respected despite their lack of training. One unit under the command of Lieutenant Adnan Saidi fought to last man in its position at Pasir Panjang in Singapore.

Indian heavy artillerymen on Singapore train with their 6in 26 cwt howitzer, which first saw service in 1915. Most of these out-of-date heavy guns were upgraded in the 1930s with the addition of pneumatic tyres and brake mechanisms. The majority of these guns were lost with the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1940 and the survivors fought in the Western Desert in 1940–1. This gun still has the old metal wheels fitted and probably has not been modified in any way since its First World War service.
