Rob continues calling their house after the baby shower, until I agree they can pass along my number. Then he calls me relentlessly. A month later when it comes up again, I ask my friend Nicole to come with me. Strength in numbers, right? Itâs just a vacation. One little visit. A free trip to Chicagoâthatâs what I tell myself. And I donât want to go alone.
Nicole follows me through my eerily familiar flight routine and memorized OâHare walk out to the waiting limo. I long ago stopped expecting Rob to pick me up, regardless of the begging level it takes for me to come. The drive is nicer with another person, and weâre at the hotel sooner than I think.
Once again, Iâm in a beautiful room. Large windows look out on the city, a spacious main area leads to two bedrooms and an expansive bathroom with an extravagant shower meant to feel like ârainwater.â We drink a bit from the mini bar as we chat, and itâs a refreshing contrast to my final hotel days of times before when I started downing anything present while shut up in the room by myself.
As Rob arrives and walks into the room to find us happily sipping drinks, I immediately see it all over his face. He wants Nicole too. First, he flirts, then he pushes, then he guilts.
âLook at this nice hotel I got for you two. You gonna be cold to me? After all this?â He spreads his arms out to indicate his generosity. His smile is large and wide, it should seem exceptionally welcoming, but it feels predatory instead. Clearly caught off guard, Nicole is backing up, looking at me for help, eyes wide. In response, Rob grabs me by the arm and pulls me into the main bedroom. Pushing me down on my knees, he stares at her as he uses my mouth. Standing to the side, rubbing her arms nervously, she repeats over and over, âI donât wanna do nothing.â Done with me, he pushes me back slightly and grabs Nicole.
âCome on. Look at everything I gave you two. I paid for all of it, and there can be more.â His words all blend together, ringing in my ears. Itâs all the same, like something out of a nightmare, a guilt trip thatâs quickly becoming a threat. She slowly sinks to her knees as his hands slide over her shoulders, and she focuses on me for a second, eyes wide. I donât know what to do. My brain is in shock. The ringing in my ears is now deafening, like clashing cymbals. My head throbs.
What if he gets angry like he used to? What if itâs worse now if I try to stop him? I feel like Iâm seventeen again, helpless. One of his hands deftly turns her head back towards him; heâs holding himself with the other. Robert wants head from two girls and heâs going to get it. He already decided.
The guilt flows like burning waves coursing through me.
