A tasty but unsatisfying meal of mulligatawny soup and fresh bread, followed by a tumbler of sherry sitting on the bed in their small room, and the prospect of a sleepless night on a lumpy mattress left James and Beatrice feeling out of sorts. Beatrice was annoyed when she discovered a chamber pot beneath the bed, made worse when she was forced to wash with cold water.

“I may as well sleep at the railway station,” she said as she tugged off her corsets and settled in beside James. “Just think, James, I could be enjoying a beautiful high tea with Emelia wearing my lovely new dress, and instead I’m lying here trying not to belch curry in your face knowing that I won’t sleep a wink. I hope you appreciate me.”

“I always appreciate you,” he said, moving closer. “You know that.”
