Chapter 7

Jake

As I drove to the airport, I couldn’t help but dwell on Sophia’s appearance at my cookout yesterday. As awkward as it was, it was great to have her orbiting my world for a little while. I would have preferred she had done it in the role of my . . . girlfriend? Date? Lover? That last one sounded appealing. As much as I had been trying to set aside my feelings for her these last weeks, seeing her flirt with Cole had nearly sent me over the edge. If I was honest with myself, my reaction was even more visceral than when I saw Ethan and Everleigh together. This concerned me not only because of how convoluted our situation was but also because I had really begun to think that Everleigh was the one for me. What did that make Sophia?

I realized that despite my confusion about my feelings for Sophia, I needed to let that go for now and focus on work. Our company had a lot riding on us at this conference, as did our clients, who were counting on us to raise the capital they needed for their various ventures. I had no choice but to compartmentalize my feelings this week and bring everything I had to these presentations. This was where the rubber met the road, and there was no time for complicated emotions. Satisfied with my inner pep talk, I pulled into the long-term parking, grabbed my bag, and headed into the airport, where I was sure Sophia would be waiting.

The flight to Vegas was uneventful, and it was obvious that, like me, Sophia had decided to ignore what had happened yesterday and dive right into work. We laid out our itinerary for the week, and then Sophia put in her headphones and closed her eyes for the remainder of the trip. Once we arrived at the hotel and checked in, Sophia informed me that she planned to order room service and get some sleep in preparation for tomorrow. We agreed to meet for breakfast to go over any last-minute details and prepare for our first meeting, which was at nine o’clock.

While this conference, one of the largest gatherings of venture capitalists and businesses of the year, had a set program, it also allowed time throughout the day for meetings. As one of the larger equity management firms in the country, our company was one of the sponsors of the conference and, therefore, in addition to having our name splashed around the hotel and conference center, we had a very nice conference room solely for our use throughout the four days of the event. This was my second year representing our firm in Vegas, and last year I had accompanied Dave and his counterpart from New York. I was surprised that Sophia hadn’t made it last year, but I had never had a chance to ask her about it.

The conference kicked off officially with a luncheon tomorrow, and then there was a gala Thursday night.
