Sammi

This morning, they traveled along the same river bank underneath the Notre Dame cathedral where Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron had danced in the 50s. Not long into the walk, Sammi got nauseous. It must’ve been the lack of food before they left for the day, she rationalized. But as her nausea grew, a part of her wondered if she might be pregnant.

It can’t be happening yet, don’t get ahead of yourself.

Jag had held her hair back as she became ill. What should’ve been a romantic stroll through the spot of her favorite classic musical became a moment of classic embarrassment as she emptied the contents of her stomach. But he’d been a gentleman about it like always, and like always, he looked handsome with his finely fitted button down and khakis. Her man was hot.

“You want to keep going?” he asked once she finished.

“No, let’s go back to the hotel. I’m not feeling well. I need to lie down.”

“Okay.”

Holding her hand, Jag brought her back the way they came. They parked not far away on a side street. He helped her in and she closed her eyes to stop the spinning. Halfway back to the hotel, in their tiny rental car, she asked him to stop off at a pharmacy.

He didn’t put two and two together until she came back with her purchase.

“Got your pill?”

Sammi covered her mouth to hide her laughter.

“What’s so funny?”

“You really have no idea what I was buying here, after I was nauseous and threw up?” Even after all those times you finished inside me?

She waited.

He usually wasn’t dense like this, so she laughed even harder. Jag finally lit up with excitement. “You’re pregnant,” he exclaimed.

She stopped laughing and patted his knee. “Easy there, we don’t know yet. Either I’m pregnant or the duck didn’t go over so well last night.”

“I’m betting on the baby. The duck tasted delicious. No way that would’ve caused it.”

Sammi gave him the side eye as they took off back to the hotel. “This isn’t something to bet on. It’s not like a sporting event.”

“I’m betting on the baby,” he repeated. Try as she might, she couldn’t wipe that smug grin off his face.

Her mouth tasted sour and her stomach rumbled. Sammi leaned back and relaxed while Jag kept trying to get her to drink some water.

“You’re so excited for me to pee, aren’t you?”

It was sweet. Almost too sweet.

Jag wanted a baby as much as she did.

Back in the hotel’s front drop off, the valet took the car off their hands. Gripping her hand tightly, Jag led the way up to the top floor. They couldn’t get inside to the bathroom fast enough. As she went in, Jag waited impatiently on the other side.

She had a little performance anxiety as she sat down, but eventually she peed on the thing. “You might be waiting a while,” she called out to him.

“Should I go away?”

Sammi stood up and brought the test over to the counter. It didn’t read anything yet, but she remained staring at it.
