Eventually, Walter managed to pull up Harriet’s nightdress and the cook got up and went to sleep in his room, leaving them to it. Harriet was furious, but there was nothing the young housemaid could do – to cry out would be to lose her job and reputation. Walter got on top of her and pinned her down with all his weight. She kept her legs closed, but eventually, to get rid of him, relented. In the morning, they were woken by the cook. Back in his room, Walter found his foreskin was torn, but not bleeding. Later, when they had sex again, it did bleed. She said she had been a virgin until he had forced himself on her, but when she stayed out nights with the baker, Walter slept with the cook.
