The little chimp had been wrapped in a blanket and was being carried into the sanctuary. We saw its tiny, hairy foot stretch from within the folds of the blanket, little black nails against the soft, leathery skin.

Some of the humans went around to the back of the truck. My tail wagged half my body in excitement. Something wasn’t right though. The human I liked sounded different. His body was saying he was scared. He was moving some of the others away from the truck. He said, ‘Be careful,’ and repeated it, more urgently. The yard was busy and bustling. Birds squawked and flapped, chimps wrestled, dogs, me included, barked and whined. We peered at the back of the truck, where a chain was hanging loose, swaying in the wind. The yard was breezy, which made the dust dance in whirls. Suddenly, the loose chain pulled tight, with a crack like a whip. The birds stopped squawking, chimps stopped babbling, dogs stopped barking. I mean, even my fleas stopped singing. Every eye was focused on the chain, wondering what was pulling on it with so much force. No one moved.

The chain SNAPPED.
