Chapter 14
I stayed in Florenceâs house, watching out of the window, wondering if it was safe to go back out again. But also, where would I go? Run back to the hotel? Start investigating as Debbie again? My last conversation with Gordon had been a disaster. Previously, Iâd wanted to work alongside him as much for being with him as understanding what was going on. As I stood looking at the window, I didnât chastise myself for that.
Iâm human, allowed to be attracted to men, or whatever man. Iâm allowed to pursue a relationship. After all, Alan is dead. While he was with me, I was committed as anyone, but now heâs gone. Well, letâs just say that the physical and companionable sides of my marriage were needing to be satisfied.
As I stood at the window, I saw Gordon wasnât the right person. Like Iâd said, he was a good man. But should I leave him cold, or keep contact and see if we could help each other in this struggle? The struggle had changed, hadnât it? It was no longer just about revenge. Suddenly, it was as if I was part of the place. I was a vigilante; I was no longer the avenger.
My phone rang at ten oâclock. It was Gordon. Apparently, heâd rung the hotel.
âWhere are you?â he demanded.
âI just needed some time on my own, Gordon. Some time away. Last night got pretty heated.â
âI was worried about the news of riots. I was desperate to know you hadnât gone down there.â
âNo, I havenât. I havenât looked at the news, either.â
âWell,â he said, âthereâs been a lot of deaths. Some of our guys from the precincts in the cityâs north are dead. There was a bloodbath going on. That Jac Moonshine showed up as well. Sheâs not helping, just making it worse. I think she may have tagged a police officer.â
âPolice officer? From where?
âWhat do you think? Dawn!â
âAll right. Itâs just you said some of your guys were dead.â
âNo, it was one of the Blackendland officers, but weâre all one force and so we take it pretty hard.â
That wasnât what I saw out on the street, but then again, Gordon hadnât been there, and if there had been some rumors, he wouldnât have told me. He was very proud of what he did within the force, but with my arguments about Jac, he certainly wouldnât have given me ammunition.
âWeâre getting a court injunction to force the Mayorâs office to publish details of the deals around the neighborhood. The Mayor said they canât do that, citing various legal precedents, but Steven thinks we can get past it, and Steven doesnât say that unless we can.â
âThatâs good,â I said, âkeep pushing with that.â
âOf course, I will,â said Gordon. âLook, about last night, itâs playing on me. I was very heavy-handed. Iâm sorry, itâs just the way Iâm brought up. Itâs the way I am. You know, we look to protect you. Iâm a police officer. I can see youâre not someone who likes too strong a hand of protection around them.
