GETTING PERSONAL
After talking more with Dr. Hackett, Joel decided the best strategy would be to send postcards to the homes of the H. J. Heinz Companyâs executives. Postcards would work better than letters, he thought, since family members would notice them and read the messages. âI imagined the kids of these people showing the cards to their parents when they came home from work and asking, âWhatâs this?â I thought that would help make the executives think about what they were doing.â
And home was more personal than the office. âIf we just wrote letters to the company,â says Joel, âthey would just get thrown in a pile by a secretary. We wanted to have the postcards waiting at home each night after a day at the office.â
How many executives should they send cards to? Not just one, since one could just throw all the cards away and no one else in the company would know. Not too many, either, since they wanted a few targeted individuals to feel responsible. Three sounded about right.
