TYPES OF MEDITATION FOR THE BODY
Body Scan Meditation
Have you reached a point where you are sick of blowing all of your hard-earned money on extravagant trips to far-off lands? You donât even have to leave the house (or office, or car or wherever you happen to be) to experience the serenity of a vacation thanks to a practice called body scan meditation. All you require is a relaxing spot to lie down and the ability to concentrate on the myriad aches and pains present throughout your body.
To begin, find a place to lie down that is comfortable for you, close your eyes then take a long, deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Now, concentrate on each and every part of your body, beginning at the top of your head and working your way down.
Take a moment to focus on your head and become aware of any feelings of tension or discomfort that you might be experiencing. You could be suffering from a headache, or it could be that your jaw is clenched. Acknowledge whatever it is, then let it go. Visualize that headache being swept away. Unclench your jaw. Moving on to your face, note any creases or furrows that may be present, and visualize them being smoothed out like a shirt that has just been ironed.
Next focus on your neck and shoulders. Because this is where many of us store a lot of tension, really concentrate your attention on these areas for a moment. Imagine any knots or tightness in your muscles vanishing like ice cream on a hot summer day as you stretch them out.
As you continue your scan down to your arms, hands and fingers, stop for a moment and pay attention to whether you are experiencing any tingling or numbness. Imagine that any tension youâre feeling is being released through your fingertips like water from a tap.
Moving on to the front and back of your chest, feel the expansion and contraction of your ribcage as you take a long, deep breath in then out. Imagine having a team of experienced massage therapists work their magic on your back to relieve any aches, pains or tension that might be there.
Take a moment to focus on any discomfort or bloating you may be experiencing as you move down to your stomach and hips. Imagine all of your aches and pains melting away as a warm blanket wraps you in its embrace. And at long last, youâve arrived at your lower extremities, the legs and feet. If you have any aches or pains, imagine that a group of tiny, magical gnomes are massaging them away (because who doesnât enjoy a good gnome massage?).
You wonât have to leave the house or spend any money to experience the benefits of this full-body meditation that will leave you feeling relaxed and revitalized. So, the next time you find yourself feeling stressed or overwhelmed, just keep this in mind: You can always treat yourself to a mini-vacation by meditating on your body.
