Chapter Four

Lorne felt nervous on the drive over to Jackson’s house. Why? She didn’t have a clue, but the warning bells going off inside told her to be on her guard, even more than usual. She had her mobile tucked in her jacket pocket with Pete’s number punched in ready to go, all she had to do was hit the call button if she was in trouble and he’d be on his way.

She had decided to dress down for the visit, choosing to wear a pair of slim-fit jeans and a denim jacket to match, with a loose fitting jumper underneath. Her outfit was probably far from what Jackson expected her to turn up in but she’d play dumb. She had her excuse worked out, something about messing around with the dogs all day and not wanting to get grubby.

She drove up the tree-lined drive in awe. Before her stood a stunning stone farmhouse, a circular flowerbed at the front, decked out in winter flowering pansies, and several barns to the side. Winding down her window, she could hear the faint sound of dogs barking, confirming the kennels were a fair distance from the main house.

Jackson appeared on the doorstep when she crunched up the drive and pulled to a stop outside the house.

Lorne smiled as she got out of the car, Jackson stepped forward taking her hand he kissed the back of it. The gesture made her skin crawl but the smile never slipped from her lips.

“Hey, stupid of me I know, but I never got your name last night,” he said as he guided her through the large hallway into the stylish living room. The interior of the house was like something out of a designer magazine, all the furniture and fittings were either pristine white or gold. She couldn’t help feeling both impressed and surprised by the man’s taste. Maybe it wasn’t his choices on show after all, but that of the woman who’d accompanied him to the race meeting.

“That’s right, silly of me, I’m Lindsay.”

He waited and raised an expectant eyebrow, when she didn’t catch on he asked, “Lindsay what?”

She giggled like a teenager and replied, “I’m a numpty, whatever must you think of me... Lindsay Salmon, you know, as in the fish.” Why she had chosen that name made her chuckle to herself.

“Well, Lindsay Salmon, I hope you brought your bikini with you, the pool’s lovely this time of year, well any time of year, ‘cos it’s covered.” He laughed and winked at her.

“Oh my God, I’m a double numpty, I had my bag with my towel and bikini all ready but left it in the lounge.” She thumped a clenched hand against the side of her head.

He stepped towards her his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Hey, I’m not averse to a little skinny dipping.”

Lorne’s mouth flew open but before she could respond, the redhead flounced into the room. “Oh you’re here, are you?”

Her eyes bore into Lorne’s and she could almost feel the hatred emanating from the woman.
