Chapter 9

Progressive Tenses

1. Uses of the Progressive Tenses

In Italian, often the present and the imperfect tenses are used to express continuing actions, while in English the progressive tenses are generally used.

In Italian, the progressive tense is used when one wants to emphasize that the action is going on at the time of speaking.

There are two progressive tenses: present progressive and past progressive.

2. Forms of the Progressive

The progressive tenses are formed with the verb stare + the gerund. The gerund is formed by adding -ando, -endo, -endo forms to the infinitive stem of -are, -ere, and -ire verbs respectively.
