Chapter Six

It was one of Beth St. James’ most often used plot devices, mostly because it was such a frequent occurrence in real life that women instantly connected to it. In the past she may have ignored the link between a secret wish and the instant unfulfillment of said wish, this time she had no such luck.

Ever since that amazing night of dinner and laughter, dirty and earth-shattering loving, Gio had been a ghost. But rather than wallow about it or confront him over his behavior, Bethany brushed it aside. She’d spent the past few days seeing everything significant and insignificant Rome had to offer. She tried out all types of cuisine and had fallen in love with a seafood risotto dish that still had her mouth watering. And as far as work went, well, she was in the zone. She had written dozens of pages and the story was unfolding beautifully. Something about this city revitalized her, breathing new life into her and her work. As the words flew out of her and onto the page, a smile curled her lips and she felt a bestseller in her future.

She could only hope it wasn’t the romantic haze of being in a city like Rome that had given her this rebirth. If so, she was packing up her belongings and moving here permanently.

She spent her days writing, either on the balcony overlooking the city or she’d take her laptop and charger to some spot where she could people watch and let her fingers get to work. She watched lovers young and old stroll along the streets holding hands, kissing, and enjoying a leisurely walk. It was beautiful, and it highlighted to Bethany just how much she wanted that for herself. Despite her protestations, she knew she wanted everlasting love, romance, and a big boisterous family. She wasn’t sure if she would find it, but seeing a city full of beautiful people in love made her want to pursue it. Which she would, as soon as she returned to New York.

She was done fooling herself about Gio. As explosive as their loving had been a few nights back, nothing else had changed between them. That wasn’t strictly true, she knew because something had changed — for the worse. Gio was up and gone before she awoke and he didn’t call throughout the day. He came home late when she was either out enjoying Rome nightlife or asleep in the guest bedroom. She’d taken the guest room not as punishment, but because it didn’t feel right to share his bed when he was going through such an effort to avoid her.

So she went about her day, every day, taking advantage of her time in Rome. But she wouldn’t take advantage for much longer. She didn’t have the right to say anything to Gio about avoiding her and working so much, which meant she shouldn’t stay at his house. If she didn’t see him before she went to bed tonight, she would find
