Nerves were on edge, Fitz noticed, as he sat in front of the fire drinking a Coke and occasionally adding another piece of wood to keep a constant room temperature. He figured that most of the time a fire was a comforting presence, and that had not changed since cave man days.
The guides were still playing cards and drinking the left-over beer from the first hunter to die, Marlow Todd, who had not even gotten a chance to drink one. Normally the guides were not officially allowed to drink during the hunting week, but Fitz guessed that Brody, and perhaps a few others, had a bottle hidden somewhere. After all, some hunters can make the most patient guide want a stiff drink after a long day in the field.
Glancing around the room, everyone was drinking like it was their last day on Earth. Even Cara had a beer in her hand as she walked back from the cooler and took a seat next to Fitz. If anyone had a reason to drink, considering the loss of her husband that morning, it was Cara.
âA Coke at this hour?â Cara asked. The alcohol had brightened her disposition.
âThe water has a funny taste,â Fitz explained. Maybe subconsciously he was still thinking about Caraâs husband being poisoned, and that could have come from the water or any other source. âBesides, I think I might be up late tonight on watch.â
Cara glanced around the room and said, âYeah, a lot of people drink when theyâre nervous.â
âI donât judge, Cara. Most of my friends drink. I usually end up driving people home. In my business. . .my former business, it doesnât pay to get a DUI.â
âMine either,â she agreed. She moved a bit closer and spoke more softly. âWhat do you think is going on here?â
That was the major problem. He didnât know for sure. âThis is a tough one. Weâre isolated. And someone wants us dead.â
The two old warriors got up and headed back toward their room, saying good night to the guests and guides, their shuffling like that of the old men they truly were and not former military officers.
âBut why?â Cara asked with genuine concern.
âI donât know.â
She looked deep into his eyes, and it was as if she was trying to find truth in his words. âSeriously?â
He drank the last of his Coke and set the can onto an end table. Then he closed the distance like a conspirator. âIâm a little concerned about how we all got here.â
âYou mean how we all won this trip?â
âRight. Itâs just a little strange that only Blake and Bambi Unger paid for this trip. I mean I could see perhaps one couple per week.â
This seemed to resonate with Cara, who furled her brows. âWhat about you? Did you win more than one ticket for this week?â
âYeah, I did. I won a trip for two. I planned on bringing a friend, a sheriffâs deputy, on this hunt. But he blew his knee out a couple weeks ago chasing down a suspect in downtown Reno.
