Isla sat on a plush loveseat cushion, her hands smoothing back and forth over the soft fabric. Her eyes were glued to the wonder in front of her. Fire. That’s what Anita had called it. Isla marveled at the heat and at the orange and red dance it did as it kept them warm when darkness came and the ocean’s winds became unforgivingly cold.

Kaya sat across from her, her bare feet up on the couch, tucked under her, a book in her lap. Her hair had been pulled out from her ponytail and it splayed around her shoulders, straight and thick. It looked so soft, Isla wanted to reach out and touch it, but she minded her manners, continuing to touch the softness of the pillows that surrounded her. They had things like this in the sea, of course. Not the same, but equivalents of comfort. However, the difference in texture was stupefying.

She stilled her hands when Anita came into the room, walking slowly as she tried not to spill the tea she carried. She handed a cup to Isla, who stared at the liquid curiously. One cup went to Kaya, who thanked Anita and brought it to her lips, winking at Isla. Anita took the last cup and sat beside Kaya, flashing an encouraging smile at the princess. Curious, she brought the cup to her lips, sniffing at it. Pleasantly surprised at the scent, Isla mimicked Kaya and took a sip. Again, she was overwhelmed at the flavors that humans had at their disposal.

She gulped the rest down, enjoying the heat that filled her as she did. She set the empty cup down, embarrassed but satisfied. She folded her hands in her lap and looked up to find Anita watching her, that same sadness in her eyes. She tensed, suddenly hyperaware that something was about to happen.

“Isla,” she paused, as if unsure how to proceed. “I imagine what you have been through to get here has been very traumatic.” Isla cast her eyes downward, her fists tightening around one another on her knees. “I know it may be hard to talk about, but I was wondering if you could tell me how you got here. And why? It would go a long way in helping me to help you.”

Isla bit her lip. Kaya had set her book aside, open with its spine up. Moby Dick the spine read. Isla ran a hand through her hair, leaning against the side of the loveseat. “It’s kind of a long story,” she whispered.

“Don’t worry,” Anita responded, “I have my own long story to tell.”
