As Lewin and Curtis brutalized their opposition, I turned back toward the bleachers, but before I could leave ringside, I saw Pete Scalzo walking toward me. He stopped me in my tracks and said, “Wait here for a minute.” Pete went toward the bleachers and waved for my father to come down. I saw him talk to my father for a moment, throw his hands up as to say, “Sorry, but I can’t do anything to help.” My dad walked over and said, “Pete wants us to leave.” I was devastated.

Outside the arena, my father told me that Pete was quite embarrassed when a few of the other commissioners questioned how “that kid” got into Sunnyside underage (I really did not look like I was 13). That was the last time we would go to Sunnyside for a few years, and it was all my fault. To make matters worse, on the Washington TV show two days later, Lewin and Curtis gloated about how they got some kid tossed out of Sunnyside.

In 1972, I met and interviewed Don Curtis in Florida. He was promoting a show in Jacksonville. I told him the story and he actually recalled the incident and said, “That was you? Holy cow, I hope you aren’t here to seek revenge.”

As for Mark Lewin, I’ve told him the story many times, and he always gets a kick out of it.
