FOURTEEN
I've heard a lot of pissing and moaning from the males of our species about their collective frustration of not being able to understand women. As a teenager, I obviously have no insights or wisdom to pass along. But I do, at my tender age, have experience to add to the vast ocean of baffled-male incomprehension. Fortunately, my latest run in with female-engendered what-just-hit-me was, if not painless, at least not protracted. Maybe Natalie was just sending me a general message, attempting to deliver a learning session to me when she boxed my ears about Rosey. For whatever reason, no sooner had she remanded me to the dog house, she figuratively summonsed me back, and I was quickly blessed by the warmth of her embrace. Thank goodness I was kidnapped and subsequently left for dead by Visquisor. That seemed to have bought me a lot of brownie points payable toward forgiveness.
After a few rounds of her forgiving me, we lay in bed next to one another, just chilling. It was nice. I idly stroked her hair as Natty was curled up next to me, her head on my chest.
"I know nothing will ever be normal again," she remarked wistfully, "but it sure would be nice if things got a little more boring."
"Predictable and not-deadly sounds awfully good to me too." Then, after a moment, I added, "I think we'll get there, babe. Someday."
"I hate porches," Natalie remarked ... um, unexpectedly.
"You do?"
"Yes. They're stuffy and too darn old-fashioned."
"Are you referring to porches on houses, or the structural elements such as porticoes, verandas, and loggias in general?"
"No, on houses. Our house cannot have a porch."
"Ah, sure. I promise it will not have a porch."
"So you agree we'll have a house one day?" she confirmed.
I got a little nervous, sensing a nascent emotion that was unintelligible to my male mind. "Of course. In fact, we sort of do now. Defiant has been our home for some time. And Arc can be too."
"Oh, pooh. Those may well be our homes, but they're never houses. No. Houses have wooden walls, tile roofs, chimneys, and backyards for our kids to play in."
Yikes, we were planning ahead here, weren't we? Best not to comment on that aspect of our so far most pleasant conversation. "They do, but they better not have a porch," I menaced playfully.
"Well, a back porch is fine. Just not a starched-shirt front porch."
"Note to Realtor: Back porches only but not necessarily."
She rubbed my tummy. "Now you're talking."
Hey, for another tummy rub, I'd talk some more. Never had one before, but I hoped my future was full of 'em.
After some more quiet, Natalie said, "I love you."
I swept my hand through her hair more forcefully. "And I love you."
"Chris?"
"Yes?"
"I don't want to die when Visquisor comes back to destroy Earth."
Yikes, that was a serious and specific concern of hers. "We'll be fine. Arc is easily capable of neutralizing anything he can throw at us."
"Well, maybe eventually. But if he attacks Spokane first because you're here, we could all be in danger.
