Scene Eight

Lights up. About half an hour has passed. Paul is still at it. Cathy is fast asleep.

Paul Cathy?

She doesn’t stir. He climbs out of bed, careful not to wake her. He sits on the edge of the bed. He looks at her, fast asleep.

Cathy!

She doesn’t stir. He leaves the room. He returns with a torch. He goes under the covers, between her legs. He turns off the sidelight. He turns on the torch. We see it alight under the covers. Lights down.

Scene Nine

The law firm where Paul and Kay work. Daniel is working on Paul ’s laptop. Silence as Daniel works. Paul racks his brains for a way to break the ice.

Paul So, any idea why it’s so slow?

Daniel Did you notice it slowing down after you installed the anti-virus software?

Paul Shouldn’t that speed it up?

Daniel Well, it should protect it, but it’s heavy on memory, so that might be what’s causing it. I’ll see if it’ll take more RAM.

Pause as Daniel works.

Paul We’re so used to everything being so fast these days, aren’t we? We expect instant results. Impatient.

Daniel Well, there’s no reason your computer shouldn’t be fast and well protected. It’s just a matter of the right hardware and software.

Paul Speed is important, alright. But it’s no good being fast – well, no … it’s not possible to be fast if you’re not doing it right, is it?

Daniel Not doing it right?

Paul It. If it’s not doing what it’s – what you want it to do. Say your computer is supposed to do something, a certain task, like a, like a, like making a connection to a particular site, and say it has all the power in the world – all the willingness to get it right, but it just can’t, you know, get there. It’s trying and it’s trying, but it’s just not getting anywhere. And that site – that site that’s really important to you – it’s just being neglected.

Daniel Well, what you’re talking about could have something to do with the actual internet connection.

Paul Yes, the connection. I’m not connecting.

Daniel But there’s no problem with the connection.

Paul What?

Daniel On your laptop.

Paul No.

Daniel Maybe you have the wrong address? The wrong website address.

Paul Well, that was a problem, to be honest. I was looking in the wrong place.

Daniel Well, it’s easy to get that wrong. One digit and you’re out.

Paul You can be an inch away and it might as well be a mile.

Daniel Do you have the right address now?

Paul Yes, but there’s something else I’m not … I mean, I know where to look now, I’ve got the power, the determination, but I still feel like I can’t get in.

Daniel Maybe you’re not allowed access?

Paul Yeah, that’s what it feels like. Like I’m not wanted.

Daniel I know that feeling.

Paul Yeah?

Daniel Yeah.

Pause as they both reflect on this.

Paul No, I don’t have to pay for it. (Pause.) But I know what you mean.

Daniel If you want to tell me what you’re looking for, I’m quite good at finding sites, especially tricky ones.
