Chapter Thirteen

Zeke's head felt as if someone had clubbed him with a sledgehammer. He groaned and tried to rub his forehead, but he couldn't reach it. He snapped his eyes open and found himself staring at a cathedral ceiling covered in the most incredible swirls of color and paint, all of it gilded with gold. They were ancient scenes of… he narrowed his eyes and looked closer. A man was sprawled on his back, thousands of tiny daggers wedged in his body. Satan was standing over him, a delighted grin on his face… Oh, shit.

He jerked his arms with renewed force, wincing as pain wrenched through his shoulders. The heavy iron chains clanged, but he couldn't begin to break them. Sweat trickled down his back as he struggled harder. Crap. What had he done to warrant ending up here!

"Oh, good. You're awake."

"Theresa?" He rifted his head, searching desperately for her. When he saw her standing at the foot of the king-sized bed he was lying on, he nearly groaned in relief. "T! Get me out of here!"

"It's okay, Zeke. You're safe." She was wearing a pair of jeans that fit her curves just right, and a black T-shirt that showed off the tattoo on her collarbone. Her hair was swept up in a disheveled knot on top of her head, and her eyes were concerned. "Are you okay?" She crawled onto the bed and knelt next to him, checking his restraints.

"What's going on?" He stared at her while she shifted the padding on his wrists. "Did you bring me here?"

She sat back on her heels, her jaw clenched in determination. "I'm really sorry I had to kidnap you, but it was the only way."

"Tell me I'm not in Satan's torture chamber."

She grimaced. "Yeah, sorry. I didn't have anything set up at home, and Becca arranged for me to borrow this place."

He searched her face, trying to figure out what she was thinking. "So you could torture me?"

"No." She swung off the bed and walked over to a golden control panel on the wall. "For training."

"Training what?"

She hit a button and the top half of the bed began to rise, until he was sitting up. "Craftmatic bed," she said. "Comes in handy."

From this position, he could see the entire room. There were all sort of strange-looking devices adorned with leather straps and metal bits. But there were also several shelves of erotic massage oils and objects that looked Otherworld in origin. He shifted and felt a tug on his ankles. A quick glance told him he was shackled there as well, but again, Theresa had covered his skin with thick towels to protect him. He frowned and looked at her again. "Fill me in, T. What the hell's going on?"

She came to stand at the foot of the bed, shifting restlessly. It was then he saw the apprehension in her eyes.

The fear. He softened his voice, wishing he could reassure her with his touch. "T, what's wrong?"

"I need to learn how to protect myself from slayers.
