Echoing Myers, Prince insisted that the content of automatic writing rules out a purely physiological interpretation. The writings do not consist of words, phrases, and paragraphs that might be mere repetitions or memories of previous experiences, but rather are made up of original compositions. Sometimes they convey "fanciful fairy-tale-like fabrication," sometimes they provide ingenious answers to questions, and sometimes they indicate a personal character that contrasts to the normal character of the writer. He concluded: "If such a document were presented as testamentary evidence in the ordinary course of human affairs, it would seem as if the burden of proof would lie with him who would insist upon interpreting it as without psychological meaning and as only the expression of a physiological activity of the nervous system without thought" (Prince, 1907, p. 75).
