Remove the seeds and pith from the peppers and chop into cubes. In a large saucepan gently sauté the peppers and onion in the oil and butter until soft, but not browned. Add the spices and stir about for a few moments. Now add the turnip and three-quarters of the stock and simmer until the vegetables are tender. Purée the soup in a blender until smooth, add salt and black pepper to taste, and dilute with the reserved stock, reheat and serve.

If a more textured soup is preferred, just purée one cupful of the soup, return it to the saucepan, reheat and serve.

A few slices of streaky bacon, chopped and crisply fried in butter, make an excellent garnish.
