Chapter 13

I couldn’t believe Maureen knew Rory. I stared at her in bewilderment. But it was Ryan who seemed even more stunned.

He studied Maureen’s every movement, as if he didn't know her. I glimpsed moments of the awkward interactions between them as I continued to carve a map of the catacombs into the beach sand. I looked back over my shoulder—Doona Castle rose above the coast. My eyes wandered up the green hills back toward the clearing.

Then, just behind a crest, a motorbike revved along a ridge, cutting the tranquility with its high-pitched engine. Murt hunched at the handle bars and rode the rough terrain with effortless agility. Paul had pulled his car out and left a bit earlier and I could only imagine that they'd be meeting up again for round two, probably at the university.

It would be impossible to stop Murt from returning and disturbing the sanctity of the site but Paul seemed to think he might have a professional hold of ethics over him. Something told me, though, that discovering the secrets of time would trump any threats of tarnishing Murt's professional reputation.

"Ach, would ya stop gawking at me like that, Ryan." Maureen swatted at him. "I'm no different than when we had tea last night."

My attention shot back to Maureen and Ryan.

"But the feckin' robe, Shanny?" He shook his head.

Her shoulders squared. "It's the sacred cloak of the Druids, grandson. And ya might start gettin' used to it."

She stepped closer to my makeshift map and cocked her head to get perspective.

She continued to Ryan, "It's time ya knew yer full lineage, boy. We are seers, as you know. Ovates. And we too are Keepers of the Ovate Guard."

Ryan pushed off the rock where he’d been sitting and paced. "What do you mean 'we'?"

"Training of the Druids happens 'round yer age, Ryan. It just might have ta happen a little more quickly for you, considering the task you’re entering into. We’ve no time to waste now."

Ryan chucked his jacket back at the rock and walked around my sketch. Maureen just watched him, allowing it to sink in.

I surprised myself with my own comfort in the situation of him becoming a Druid. It made perfect sense to me. I smiled inside as I pictured Ryan in a brown cloak. My blush proved he would make it hot, and plus, it was a noble thing, to carry forward thousands of years of worshipping the earth and its magical realms.

"I want to be trained too." I sat up taller and watched Maureen for a reaction. "Is it possible for me to become a Druid too?"

Maureen grinned. "Sure, you already are, dear. Don’t ya feel it? Natural selection. Ya just need some fine tuning now, is all."

My eyes widened in wonder at the idea of being part of something larger than me. Something ancient and mystical. There was more to my visions than just being a freak.

I was a seer.

An Ovate.

And we were all descended from the Druid Ovates. Every seer had a connection to them and it would be up to each one how they used their gift.
