Badgers feature in some stories about Irish saints, for example, appearing in a helpful role in a story about St Kieran.4 According to the story, the saint lived happily in the woods surrounded by the wild animals. One day, however, a fox stole one of his sandals. But before the fox had gone too far, a badger raced after him, grabbed the thief by the ear, and obliged him to return to face Kieran. A considerably less pleasant badger features in a story concerning St MacCreahy of Clare. According to the story, a broc sidh or ‘demon badger’ living in a cave near Inchiquin was terrorising the area, killing both men and cattle. It had resisted the prayers of six local saints, but MacCreahy was able to chain up the creature and throw it into a local lake.
