Designing the Solution

During the 1950s, Hopper took her ideas for compilers a step farther and helped to develop the first major computer programming language for business, called COBOL (COmmon Business Oriented Language). The language was designed with the consumer in mind. People using this language were likely to be involved in the business industry—managers, supervisors, and other businesspeople—and so Hopper and the others working on COBOL had to make programming easier to understand and execute. Like Flow-Matic, COBOL contained English-like elements such as verbs and clauses. This made it the most accessible and understandable programming language available at the time. Likewise, it became one of the first programs to be able to run on computers made by different manufacturers. It was widely popular with businesses and organizations, such as the US Department of Defense.
