RELATIONSHIPS—FROM SOLAR PLEXUS TO HEART

As we climb up the ladder of the chakras, we continue to open and grow to new levels of awareness and sensitivity. We have talked about the passage from the solar plexus chakra to the heart chakra being an “initiation” into a higher level of consciousness. One of the principal ways we experience that initiation is through relationship with others. Often, the word “relationship” is considered to mean a romantic involvement between two people, but I speak of it in this chapter as an involvement of any kind between two or more people. Relationships come in the form of parent-child, sibling, professional colleagues, social club associates, employer-employee, friends, lovers—the possibilities are endless. All of these relationships present gifts, challenges, and opportunities, often all at the same time! And, in the end, all the same guidelines apply, regardless of the label you attach to the relationship.

When discussing relationships among friends, we often talk about the work it takes to have a successful relationship. However, it is very easy to focus attention on the outside work, getting caught up in the logistics of the relationship rather than looking inside to see what is happening in our deepest feelings. It is easy to get caught up in creating a “successful” relationship. Success or failure implies that we had a particular goal in mind. In terms of relationship, we tend to think of success meaning living happily ever after together whatever the context. However, I'd like to suggest that any relationship which fulfills its purpose or offers a learning experience, and then changes form when the purpose or experience has been completed, is a “successful” relationship.

Every relationship has an energy and an agenda of its own. It can create a great and powerful energy flow between the individuals involved. When we can tune in to the highest and purest level of the relationship energy and let go of our ego's needs, then we can be aware of the opportunities, gifts, and lessons found in walking sideby-side with others. No one of us is here to teach another. We are in relationship to be a catalyst for self-learning and growth in the other. Love (as the creative force of the universe) flowing between two souls is very beautiful. The ultimate lesson of any relationship, and the ultimate lesson of life, is to allow Love to flow freely.

Commitment

AN ENLIGHTENED FORM of commitment in relationships of any kind means commitment of one soul to another soul, not commitment of personality to personality, ego to ego, dependency to dependency. Enlightened commitment means committing yourself to the essence of another being, letting go of judgments of personality. It means committing to a constant flow of Love. The goal is to allow each to live life in its essence—soul energy—with no extra costumes or judgments.

We enter into relationship playing particular roles, such as parent, child, sibling, lover, friend, employer, employee. These roles create the framework through which to begin our journey together. However, the path to
