IX

The mountain is forever divided.

The back bowl and the forward. The quarrel

in the wind does not subside as if caught

in a vortex forever in mourning

for the unchangeable past and yearning

to break free of its stronghold. Who am I?

Night’s owl calls. Snow accumulates. It can-

not stop. The earth tastes its sweetness. The side

of the mountain is spare, free of tree and

vegetation. Dark, unseasoned, as if

there’s a breach in the mountain’s heart. Where are

the hummingbirds, jays, and falcons? Once wild-

flowers dotted the bluff. Bald eagles soared

over aspen. Now mist obscures the view.
