It argues that, to understand this process, it is necessary to examine the popular culture of the Austrian Social Democratic workers’ movement. This culture produced a strain of left-wing populist nationalism that ultimately split the Social Democratic movement between Czechs and Germans. The approach taken here integrates and elaborates on recent historiographical trends in east central Europe concerning the working class as an important historical agent and category, and the nationalism or national indifference of the popular classes. The case is made for considering the genuine appeal of nationalism to ordinary people—in this case, class-conscious Czech and German industrial workers—in order to grasp its broader impact on modern European history.
