Although most scholars assert that Janus had no counterpart in Greek mythology, quite similar two-faced gods were common in other civilizations, including Babylon, Chaldea, Persia, Scandinavia, and parts of India, causing some scholars to theorize that he was imported from one of these cultures, since the Janus Gate in Rome was near a port where foreign ships arrived. Temples believed to have been dedicated to Janus were erected by the Romans in France, Austria, and the Italian cities of Padua and Genoa.
