Releasing Back of the Neck

The upper trapezius connects to the neck and base of the skull. But that is not the only muscle involved in bringing the head and neck backward. There are lots of muscles back there, and they tend to get chronically tense. In this simple movement exploration, we’ll help to release some of them.

In this exploration, see if you can notice how we’re using pandiculation.

1. Place your fingertips of both your right and left hands on the base of the skull at the back. Place the fingertips lightly where you feel some ridges or bumps or perhaps some slight tenderness at the base of the skull. Don’t press hard. Just a light touch to provide a little bit of feedback. See Figures 6 and 7 to see a handsome model demonstrating this from the front and back.
