By now accelerators were being built elsewhere, notably at the “Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire” – CERN. Founded by twelve European governments in 1954, its aim was to harness the spirit of international collaboration to make European science competitive with that of America. Its first accelerator, a synchrocyclotron, was quickly succeeded by the 28 billion electron-volt Proton Synchrotron.

The Eightfold Way was the precursor to something more fundamental. Gell-Mann and (again, working independently) George Zweig (b. 1937), a former student of Feynman, realized that the organizing principle of the Eightfold Way – a symmetry – could be explained if the particles being discovered weren’t elementary after all, but were themselves made up of smaller particles.

I CALLED THEM QUARKS.

I CALLED THEM ACES.

Gell-Mann’s choice would win out.
