The goal of CBTp is to improve individuals’ functioning and overall life satisfaction by reducing the distress and disability caused by delusions, hallucinations, negative symptoms, and thought disorder. An essential component of CBTp is its focus on the personal meaning of symptoms and anomalous experiences and on changing appraisals of these experiences in order to reduce distress. The key elements of CBTp include a shared understanding (or formulation) of psychosis between the client and therapist, identification of targeted symptoms that cause distress or interfere with the individual’s functioning, and development of cognitive and behavioral strategies to cope with these symptoms. The therapeutic process of CBTp includes the following core components: 1) engagement, 2) identification of goals, 3) assessment and formulation, 4) interventions, and 5) relapse work.
