Two days of frantic-phone checking later, the girls were at their lockers preparing for the next lesson when Vesperâs phone chirruped at her.
Wilmore: Hey you. Sorry been busy with work. Iâll give you a message soon when things ease up around here X
Camilla had to forcibly remove the phone from Vesperâs hand in order to stop her from asking Wilmore when âsoonâ would be precisely.
âBabe, he doesnât deserve a reply from you!â Camilla yelled as she danced away from Vesper with her phone. âDonât play his game!â
âI donât know, maybe he really is busy,â Sophie suggested.
âIâm not playing any game,â Vesper snarled, before forcing herself to rein in her attitude. âIâm just used to calling the shots, is all.â
âMaybe thatâs how it worked with your exes,â Camilla said imperiously. âBut this guy sounds seriously aloof.â
âItâs true,â Sophie nodded, âNobody really knows much about him or his family. I wouldnât take it personally.â
âSo youâve been snooping around on my behalf then? Or did you find that out when you were busy trying to get him for yourself?â Vesper snapped.
Shocked, Sophie turned to walk away, but Camilla stopped her. âVes, get off our backs. Weâre only trying to help.â
Vesper studied Sophieâs hurt expression and tried to determine if it was honest or superficial. After all, Sophie was the one who had mentioned her previous attempt to kiss Wilmore. Vesper was certain that Sophie would be affronted by the fact that Wilmore elected to kiss Vesper instead of her.
Through gritted teeth, Vesper mumbled out an apology that she didnât mean. Camilla handed the phone back to her, and Vesper looked at the message again despondently. She had been so convinced that Wilmore liked her.
âI just donât understand,â Vesper muttered, âHe seemed soâ¦keen.â
Camilla and Sophie exchanged glances as if to question the validity of Vesperâs claim.
Their expressions reignited Vesperâs anger. She shoved her books into her locker and slammed it shut. âWhatever, Iâm out of here.â
âWhat? But weâve got lessons now?â Camilla said, alarmed.
âSo?â
âSo, you canât just leave! Youâll get in trouble.â
âNot caring.â
âVes, stop! Where are you going?â Sophie called as Vesper stormed away.
âDonât know. Donât follow me.â
