Two days of frantic-phone checking later, the girls were at their lockers preparing for the next lesson when Vesper’s phone chirruped at her.

Wilmore: Hey you. Sorry been busy with work. I’ll give you a message soon when things ease up around here X

Camilla had to forcibly remove the phone from Vesper’s hand in order to stop her from asking Wilmore when ‘soon’ would be precisely.

‘Babe, he doesn’t deserve a reply from you!’ Camilla yelled as she danced away from Vesper with her phone. ‘Don’t play his game!’

‘I don’t know, maybe he really is busy,’ Sophie suggested.

‘I’m not playing any game,’ Vesper snarled, before forcing herself to rein in her attitude. ‘I’m just used to calling the shots, is all.’

‘Maybe that’s how it worked with your exes,’ Camilla said imperiously. ‘But this guy sounds seriously aloof.’

‘It’s true,’ Sophie nodded, ‘Nobody really knows much about him or his family. I wouldn’t take it personally.’

‘So you’ve been snooping around on my behalf then? Or did you find that out when you were busy trying to get him for yourself?’ Vesper snapped.

Shocked, Sophie turned to walk away, but Camilla stopped her. ‘Ves, get off our backs. We’re only trying to help.’

Vesper studied Sophie’s hurt expression and tried to determine if it was honest or superficial. After all, Sophie was the one who had mentioned her previous attempt to kiss Wilmore. Vesper was certain that Sophie would be affronted by the fact that Wilmore elected to kiss Vesper instead of her.

Through gritted teeth, Vesper mumbled out an apology that she didn’t mean. Camilla handed the phone back to her, and Vesper looked at the message again despondently. She had been so convinced that Wilmore liked her.

‘I just don’t understand,’ Vesper muttered, ‘He seemed so…keen.’

Camilla and Sophie exchanged glances as if to question the validity of Vesper’s claim.

Their expressions reignited Vesper’s anger. She shoved her books into her locker and slammed it shut. ‘Whatever, I’m out of here.’

‘What? But we’ve got lessons now?’ Camilla said, alarmed.

‘So?’

‘So, you can’t just leave! You’ll get in trouble.’

‘Not caring.’

‘Ves, stop! Where are you going?’ Sophie called as Vesper stormed away.

‘Don’t know. Don’t follow me.’
