According to a plaque mounted into the floor, you and another spectator, a stranger, are instructed to rearrange the letters until they spell out a recognizable phrase.
You both stand in front of the easel, skeptical. You make the first hesitant move. You move an E in front of a T, an R after an O, an S all the way to the end of the phrase.
The letters remain inexplicable, obtuse.
The other spectator steps up, arranges and rearranges letters, frowns unhappily at the wash of incomprehension.
You both move letters across the board, trancelike, but the phrase remains unknowable. At times you feel as if you are approaching senseâor something recognizableâbut meaning eludes you.

As you arrange and rearrange letters, you glance over at the other spectator. You are amazed. You were certain that she was a young woman, but this person next to you is clearly a man. Whatâs more, the details of his face blur. His nose slides slowly across his face, his hair waves as if in a stiff breeze, his shoulders drop and rise like warm dough. He appears, as you both now arrange and rearrange letters in a kind of ecstatic fog, to rotate slowly or to drift or slide blade-thin across the room, vanishing into the corners and back again. And the letters move.

Triumphant, wholly shocked, you turn toward the spectator to share the victory. He is gone. That is, his details have evaporated. He is a silhouette, a ghost of a person through whom you could move your hand.
The easel has vanished, has become an intangible presence, a blurry silhouette in a room, a symbol for a lucid and evanescing presence.
