Avery
Is this really my life?
I must be dreaming.
And if I am, Iâm not sure that I want to wake up.
That would mean the man who saved me isnât real.
I look over at him - at Gabe - and my heart flutters. He looks like he belongs here in the club, with power and prestige dripping from every single one of his pores. His eyes, confident and dominant, like he owns the place. Because, after all, he does.
And my insides warm when he glances over at me. There are other men here, and all of them are good-looking. They all have the right features, and the right clothing, and they are all wearing masks, which gives them all a level of both anonymity and uniformity.
But Gabe, my goodness, even with his mask, he stands out in a way I never knew possible.
He stood out when he came in from the cold and said nothing when he spotted me. When his eyes trailed up and down my body, drank me in, I knew.
I knew something was going to happen. I knew I would be different. I knew this would be a different kind of day.
He takes two glasses from the man behind the bar and turns to me, walking over to the couch where Iâm sitting at a table in the main ballroom.
âIf you need or want anything else, youâll tell me,â he says. His warmth envelopes me and I slide closer to him without even an ounce of hesitation.
âI will,â I say. I smile up at him, his perfectly sexy smirk playing against his lips. âBut I canât imagine anything better than this right now.â
âI just need to know one thing,â Gabe says, caressing my hair, taking my face in his strong, dominant hands. âWhy were you in that place? Because that wasnât for you. This,â he says, pressing one finger under my chin and kissing me tenderly, âis for you.â
I turn away from him slightly, but Iâm still drawn to him. I want to tell him why I was there - why I was really there, but I donât think he really wants to know.
âYou already know why,â I reply. âI landed there because I needed the money. A girlfriend of mine from college told me about this gig as a massage therapist, and she said you could make some pretty good money from tips. I didnât...I didnât realize what kind of place it really was.â
âAnd you had a contract,â he says authoritatively. âI understand. But that isnât why you were there.â
âWhat do you mean?â
My lips tremble as my fingers come to them instinctively.
âYou know what I mean, Avery. Why did you need the money?â
âBills,â I say plainly, my voice cracking slightly. The music around us swells. He is making me confront a part of me that I donât want to think about right now. âMedical bills. For my father.â
âI understand,â he says. âYou are taking care of your father. But who is taking care of you?â
âNo,â I exhale, âyou donât understand.
