THIRTY-ONE

The doorbell rang. Aditya stirred and awoke; he saw that Meera was still fast asleep next to him. He got up and slowly walked to the door in the darkness, tripping over a pillow lying on the floor. He looked through the peephole, but could not see anyone. Then he opened the door; nobody was there. He stepped into the corridor. It was empty. He locked the door and climbed back into bed, putting his arms around Meera.

‘Who was it?’ she asked, stirring.

‘Nobody,’ Aditya said and opened his eyes as he realised that the voice did not belong to Meera. He turned towards the figure lying next to him. In the dim glow of the streetlight shining in through the window, he saw that the woman next to him was Tanvi. She had a strange smile on her face. He sat up on the bed with a start. Tanvi jumped up too, her eyes wild with excitement.

Suddenly, with a swift motion of her hand, she pulled out a sharp, gleaming knife from under the pillow. And, with a piercing scream, she plunged the knife into Aditya’s chest.
