Tour to Vík

Tour buses head east from Reykjavík on the Ring Road (Route 1), carrying you over the high heath and smoking earth of Hellisheiði before descending to the southwestern plain. They pass through Hveragerði E [map], whose geothermal greenhouses provide the country with cut flowers, tomatoes and exotic bananas and papayas, and the large service town Selfoss, before crossing the Þjórsá, Iceland’s longest river, into horse country. Over the next 100km (60 miles), Hella (pop. 800) and Hvolsvöllur (pop. 900) are the biggest settlements you’ll see.

You can generally spot the clouds of spray from Seljalandsfoss R [map] waterfall long before you reach it. The water topples 60 metres over a hollowed-out cliff, meaning you can walk right behind the falls. The river originates from Eyjafjallajökull glacier, famous for the subglacial volcano that erupted in 2010, covering everything for miles around in thick grey ash and resulting in the largest air-traffic shut-down since World War II.
