Attractive bridges cross the river to an island, where there are art galleries, shops, restaurants, and a small archeological museum (Mon–Fri 10am–7pm; donation requested).

North of the old town, the Zona Hotelera is a long stretch of coast lined with luxury hotels that appears never-ending: almost as soon as construction of a hotel is finished, work begins on a new one close by. Marina Vallarta, a 178-hectare (440-acre) upscale resort area, has even more luxurious hotels, condos, and an 18-hole golf course. Parasailing, an easy and spectacular parachute ride behind a speedboat, is a popular pastime on several of Vallarta’s beaches. Other water sports include snorkeling, scuba diving, jet-skiing, windsurfing, sailing, and deep-sea fishing for marlin, dorado, and tuna.

Playa Olas Altas and Playa de los Muertos, on the south side of Río Cuale, are the most crowded beaches, but there are several others farther south, beyond the city limits at Mismaloya or Boca de Tomatlán. Boat or catamaran excursions can be arranged from Los Muertos pier to Las Animas, a tiny community with inexpensive hotels; Quimixto, where movie director John Huston built a house, and which is popular with divers; or Yelapa, farther on, which is a nice choice for those who want to escape the all-inclusive experience and try for something more low-key. You can choose between staying in a palm-thatched palapa or a small hotel, and (finally) there is internet at the cafés. It is also possible to rent a horse or burro (donkey) and venture into the jungle to the nearby waterfalls.
