Arriving at Clonakilty 3 [map], take the bypass and park in one of the designated areas to explore the colourful and compact town centre on foot. Emmet Square is lined by tall Georgian houses. The General Post Office is in a small 19th-century church. Note the hand-painted shop signs above wooden shop fronts, which have been revived in recent years. The West Cork Model Railway Village (tel: 023-883 3224; www.modelvillage.ie) in the old railway station at the east end of town is a 1:24 scale model of the towns of Bandon, Kinsale, Clonakilty and Dunmanway, as they were in the 1940s, and of the long closed West Cork Railway. Historians will like the eclectic West Cork Regional Museum (Old Methodist School, Western Road; tel: 023-883 3115; May–Oct), which has memorabilia of the West Cork patriot Michael Collins (for more information, click here) among its extensive collection. Collins’ birthplace, a dignified memorial featuring the walls of the family farmhouse and a bronze statue, is signposted 6 miles (9km) west of Clonakilty, just beyond Lissavaird.
