—Day Five—

The lights flickering back on and the hand shaking his shoulder ended what little sleep Danny had managed to get. He looked up to see Sean putting his cameras in his pack.

“Let’s go, Cherry. Time to earn your paycheck.”

Danny rubbed his four-day beard and scratched his itchy scalp. His teeth were fuzzy and his breath even worse. Best he could do right now was a mint-flavored Lifesaver. He reminded himself that everyone smelled as bad as he did. He downed one of his last waters before rubbing his teeth with a finger. Maybe he’d get a chance to brush them later. He tightened up the laces on his new boots before standing, stretching and making his way to the toilet. On return he found the others waiting. Sean was in conversation with both of the drivers.

“Akhmas says they’re assaulting a building with some snipers on the roof. Evidently the shelling last night knocked down some of the building next door and the rebels were able to get to the bottom floor under cover. They think the snipers are still up there, but they aren’t sure. They’re going to try to either flush them out or shoot their way up and take them out. If we want to go we can ride with him.”

“Oh . . . okay.”

“You sure, Danny? Nobody is going to think less of you if you don’t want to go.”

Danny thought of the man he had bagged for two hours last night.

“I’ll go.”

Akhmas smiled and slapped Danny on the shoulder. They followed him up the stairs and through the emergency room. There were few patients right now, but the staff looked ready to get more any minute. Danny saw Eren sewing a gash in a man’s forehead. Sean pulled him quickly out of sight before she was aware of them. Once outside Danny was surprised to be inside a cloud. It was so thick he could barely see the building across from them.

“We must hurry, the fog will not last long.”

They followed Akhmas to a van and slid inside its cramped interior. Danny realized he was sitting on a stretcher and he eyeballed its stained surface in the dim light before sliding over to make room for Sean. His hand contacted something sticky and he jerked it away. Akhmas inspected the spot and discovered some tissue stuck to the vinyl surface. He peeled it off and casually threw it away. The doors slammed shut and any thoughts of staying were suddenly too late. Danny’s throat tightened and he swallowed hard against it. The engine roared to life and the van fell into gear with a short grind. A pickup with a heavy machine gun mounted to the bed led them away down the street. Danny could see little but its ass end sticking out of the fog ahead. He was aware of the sensation of travel and the occasional turn but otherwise it was like flying through dense clouds. He lost all sense of direction and did his best to hang on when they increased speed and the turns became more violent.
