When I looked closer, there was a tiny being

sitting up with her arms held out to me.

As I looked at this tiny figure, I realised that

a real sense of peace had come over me.

You don’t have to live in the country to make contact with fairies. Artist Roshilla lives in the crush of the city and still sees her fairy friends. ‘The fairies come to me in my apartment, if I’m feeling lonely,’ she tells over coffee. ‘They’re a real comfort. They let me know they’re there. They’ll pull my ears or play with my hair. Here I am living in the middle of a city of millions, and sometimes I can see all their faces. This is one connection I’ll never let go. I can feel them and on a good day I can see them.’ She went on to tell me how challenging adult life had been for her, and how much comfort she’s gained from having fairies in her life.

Though Nicolette was born in England, she has lived most of her adult life in Australia. While she loves her new home, she really misses the change of seasons and the deciduous trees of her childhood. ‘I grieve for woods and cool weather and green,’ she admits. ‘So I try to create as much green as I can in my garden. I’ve filled it with flowers, and my basil and all the green things I can. Wherever I can, I place a stalk or anything that will grow in the soil.’ Little by little, Nicolette has created a green haven in her lovely pocket handkerchief garden, to help keep her close to nature and the fairies. Nicolette’s inner city garden has been a great balm to her in the inevitable ups and downs of adult life. ‘I don’t see fairies as pretty little beings with wings,’ she says. ‘I see them more as butterflies, which is interesting, as I always have a lot of big butterflies in the garden.’

Bridgette, an archaeologist and writer, also gets a lot of help from fairies. ‘The fairies really come through for me when I write,’ she explains. ‘They’re very much in my inner eye. I have a fun room where I write that looks out onto nature. When I write, I don’t so much dream up the characters as they present themselves to me. I’ll be sitting there, and I can almost see a fairy sitting on a plant pot swinging their legs. The fairies are very visual for me then. When I write, I feel the individuality of the beings around me. That’s when I get the more tangible aspects of fairies. But when I’m in nature, it’s more like I feel them around me. When I’m in nature, I feel a healing, comforting presence from them. I’ve also felt their curiosity about me and what’s going on, a sense of being watched in a very relaxed kind of way. At other times, I’ve felt a playfulness and a lightening of mood.
