“You really think you can win against me?” Kyle is laughing. “Don’t you know who I am?”

Allie is not laughing. She’s scared, her heart is pounding. She stares around the castle tower—her sanctuary. Until he followed her.

She shifts, trying to get Kyle to move away from the wall. She doesn’t want him to see the drawings there—her designs, her reclamation of her work. Kyle would recognize them from the painting he plagiarized from her, and then he’d see it as a confrontation, she’s sure. Or he’d claim she’d copied him. Or worse—that she admired him, and maybe he’d want to draw on her wall too. And she can’t have that. This is her place. Kyle is an intruder.

“What do you want?” she snarls. “Another go?”

“I want you to stop with all these lies,” Kyle says.

Her notebooks are spread out on the floor, and Kyle mustn’t see them—she mustn’t give him more ammunition to hate her, not when she’s trying to plan revenge. And where the hell is Aion? He was supposed to be there to help her. They’d planned this carefully, and it had to be now—today was the summer solstice. The date that all the books said was perfect for the summoning.

“I’m not lying,” she bites out through gritted teeth.

“But you are.” His laugh gets darker, deeper, more sinister. “That’s what my family thinks. That’s what everyone thinks. And face it, you can’t prove anything happened. It’s your word against mine.”

Allie swallows hard. “Oh, I can prove it.”

Kyle takes a step toward her. “No. You won’t be able to. Oh, it’s a shame it’s come to this,” he says. “Such a shame.”
