The Mound in the Dark Grove

The ‘mound’ in the title of this chapter recalls the Near Eastern ‘tells’ (Arabic for a hillock or mound) of mudand stone-built villages piled one on top of another. But the association of the word with a ‘dark grove’ suggests a different kind of mound that is found in the forests of Atlantic Europe and that has associations with Druids and mystery. Far from the dusty sites of Nevali Çori, Göbekli Tepe and Çatalhöyük, the bosky hills of Brittany, Iberia, Britain and Ireland were centres of another Neolithic architectural flowering, our second – and markedly contrasting – focus of exploration. What was the connection, if any, between the two regions?
